Many people say you have to stay motivated, but what I discovered like so many others is that motivation doesn’t equal results. There is a reason for this and it’s because motivation only lasts so long. Sure when you first start a goal like losing weight, getting organized, starting a business, or whatever your goal is it’s easy because you are motivated. What happens after you are no longer motivated? What happens when things get tough? I will tell you what happens, you quit.
The excuses you come up with are endless because you blame your lack of motivation on the goal you set. Let me explain in January you set a goal are you still working towards that goal? The answer is probably no or you have slowed down because life got in the way. I know because many of my goals have fallen at the waist side too. The truth is that yes motivation can get you started, but the real work comes in when that motivation is gone.
Motivation Doesn’t Equal Results.
It’s a lot of work trying to stay motivated because motivation is a feeling and feelings change. Once that feeling is gone then what? I will tell you… You keep going because persistence is the real key to success. When you have nothing else to give, but you keep pushing forward past the obstacles that life throws in your way. That is what separates people who seem to have it all and those of us who blame life, people, or obstacles for our failures.
The reality is that anything you want in this life is going to take work, and you are not always going to feel like doing it. We let out feelings get in the way of the thing we want and therefore we wind up giving up. What you might not have known is just beyond that feeling is victory. Realizing that motivation is just a feeling is a hard pill to swallow, but that is what it is.
Motivation is what gets you going, but here are 3 things that will keep you going after that feeling of motivation is gone. The wake-up call for me was a YouTube video of Mel Robbins explaining why motivation is Garbage. Even though she is considered a motivational speaker she speaks the truth and uses her own life experiences to teach others.
3 Things To Keep You Going
Build Habits
Creating habits is a great way to keep you going. Because once you create a habit it becomes a part of your everyday life. Habits create actions that will get you to your goal. Motivation will no longer be a factor once you have built a habit of doing something consistently.
In order to create habits, you have to stay consistent. Start by creating a routine that revolves around your goals. For example, if you are trying to lose weight take small steps such as taking an evening walk after dinner or picking a salad instead of a hamburger. If you want to write a book or start a blog. Pick a few tasks each day you can do to get you closer to your goal.
Motivation might fade after a few weeks or months, but when you create a habit it will last because persistence is what is key not motivation.

Get Clarity
Be clear about what you want. When you make a goal you need to be very clear about what you want to obtain. Having clarity about what you want for the long term will help you take action to reach your goal. Make sure your tasks and habits are aligned with your goal. This will make it easier when you lose motivation. Staying on a path that is clear will get you to your goal because when you have a clear vision you will see the path you need to take.
Do It Anyways
There will be days when you simply don’t feel like working on your goal. DO IT ANYWAY! No one feels like doing anything 100% of the time. If you are determined to make it happen you will work on it even when you don’t want to. This is where habits can become really helpful. Waiting for motivation to kick in to do it won’t help you reach your goals.
You already know why because motivation is a feeling and when it comes right down to it motivation is completely unreliable. Do you know what is reliable? Your determination and will to conquer whatever goal your heart desires. I had no idea how to build a blog, but I figured it out. Do I always feel like writing? Nope… I fell into to motivation trap and kept making excuses.
Now I am sitting here at 9:30 at night writing about why motivation is a BS. Doing it anyway, because this matters to me helping people matters. Getting stuck in the loop of why not isn’t going to make it happen. Doing something will get me one step closer to my goal.
Final Thoughts
We can’t wait for the motivation bug to kick in, in order to action. We have to take action every day because something in motion stays in motion. Create a plan of action to build your habits that will last. Write it down so you can hold yourself accountable. Just start because if you are waiting until you feel like doing it isn’t going to make it happen. Stop relying on your feelings because those feeling change every minute of every day.
As cheesy as it sounds I believe you can do anything you want in this life because it is your life to live. What will be your story? That is up to you, but I hope you will understand that you are in the driver’s seat so make it happen.
